When these windows are not the right tool
Solunar theory is John Alden Knight's 1926 prediction; the ±60 and ±30 minute widths are convention, not calculation. The times are computed astronomy, the claim that fish feed inside them is not. The day rating follows moon phase — identical nationwide, so every city shows it the same. A moving front beats the moon: apps that read pressure.

Where to fish in Tampa
This page is built around Tampa Bay, with Old Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay in reach — salt water, about 10 minutes from the middle of Tampa.
The Sunshine Skyway and the other bay bridges are structure in an otherwise soft-bottomed estuary, and they concentrate fish year round. Bridge fishing here is a distinct discipline with its own tackle, worked on the moving tide.
Grass flats are the productive water and they need light, so water clarity matters more here than in a deep estuary. A red tide event or a run of muddy water shuts the flats down independently of any seasonal pattern.
Power plant discharges on the bay hold warm water in winter and are the reason manatees gather there. The same warm plumes concentrate fish, and access around them is restricted for exactly that reason.
The Hillsborough River is dammed at Sulphur Springs for the city's drinking-water reservoir, and that dam is a hard wall through the middle of town. Above it the river is fresh all the way up to the limestone shoals at the state park, some of the only Class II rapids in Florida; below it the downtown reach is tidal, and snook and redfish push right up to the dam face.
Most of the deep water inside the bay is man-made: Tampa Bay averages about eleven feet, and some eighty miles of shipping channel have been cut through it to forty-three, alongside borrow pits left by mid-century dredging. Those pits stratify and run short of oxygen at the bottom.
High water reaches Egmont Key at the bay mouth about two hours before the upper bay, low water by closer to two and a half, and the range grows about a fifth on the way up. One tide is fishable twice — the passes first, the upper bay behind them.

Snook are the signature fish and they are cold-sensitive: a severe winter cold event can kill them across the bay and take years to recover from. Their season is managed around exactly that vulnerability.
Summer heat pushes inshore fish onto deeper edges and into the passes by midday. The practical answer locally is an early start, which lines up the fishing day with sunrise rather than with a mid-morning major period.
Mangrove snapper move onto the bridge structure and the residential canal docks through the summer. They are small, abundant and one of the few local species that is easier to catch in the heat than in the cool.
Live scaled sardines — greenbacks, whitebait or pilchards in local usage — are the currency of this bay. Chum a school up with bread and menhaden oil, fill the livewell in a throw of the cast net, then pitch crippled baits onto a flat and listen for a snook popping one off the surface.
The grass the trout and redfish live on is a restoration result, not a constant. Nitrogen from sewage and fertilizer plants stripped the bay through the 1970s; once loads were roughly halved, coverage passed the 1950s baseline of about 38,000 acres by 2016. Old Tampa Bay, hemmed in by causeways, is the arm where it has been hardest to hold.
The day's two highs are rarely twins here — they typically differ by most of a foot on a mean range under two feet — and on the strongest days the table falls to a single high and a single low. One long ebb then decides where trout and redfish can hold.

The measured water here rests on a record that starts in 2020, so its winter figures are made of mild years and hold nothing like January 2010, when a cold kill closed the snook harvest statewide — on the Gulf side until 2013. Even so, the coldest January in that short record averaged 60.8 degrees, against the 60 that FWC gives as the snook's limit.

The tarpon run along the beaches and through the bay mouth peaks in May and June, and the fish are large — this stretch of coast is one of the best-known tarpon fisheries in the world.
Autumn is the strongest inshore window: redfish school, trout move back onto the flats, and the water drops out of the summer heat before the first fronts arrive. October is the month most local anglers would pick.
The Tampa–Orlando corridor takes more cloud-to-ground lightning than anywhere else in the country. On a summer afternoon a grass flat offers nothing taller than the angler and the push pole, and the build starts inland long before the storm is overhead — the sky upwind is the instrument that matters here, not the clock.
Tampa sits near the western edge of Eastern Time, so the clock runs about half an hour behind the sun — solar noon falls near half past twelve in winter and half past one on summer clocks. June sunset comes around 8:30 pm, a quarter hour later than Miami's, and daylight swings three and a half hours between solstices.
Cold fronts matter here for wind more than for temperature. The mean tidal range at St. Petersburg is about a foot and a half, so a sustained north wind behind a front drains more water out of this shallow, northeast-trending bay than the moon moves — upper-bay gauges have read three feet under prediction.
The tide moves this bay back and forth without emptying it. A University of South Florida model puts the time a parcel of water stays here at about a month near the entrance and three months up in Old Tampa Bay, and finds the flushing is done by wind and river inflow, not by the tide.
