Striped bass move north along the coast in spring and summer and back south in fall, so the harbor season is a function of that coastwide migration rather than of a resident population. When these windows are not the right tool

The Boston Harbor Islands break the harbor into channels, and the islands are fishing ground in their own right: the park lists fishing among its activities, and public ferries run to several islands, including Spectacle, Georges and Peddocks, putting their shorelines within reach of anglers without a boat.

Bluefish arrive later than stripers and leave earlier, and their presence is erratic year to year. When they show they are aggressive enough to change what tackle works for everything else in the water.

The Boston Harbor Islands park counts 34 islands and peninsulas, most of them within a short run of the downtown waterfront and many of them public land. The channels between them are the fishing, not the islands themselves.

Every spring river herring climb the Mystic River to a fish ladder at the Mystic Lakes Dam in Medford and on to spawn in Upper Mystic Lake. The Division of Marine Fisheries estimated the 2025 run through that ladder at more than 815,000 fish, against roughly 200,000 in 2012, the first year volunteers counted there. The route starts in Boston Harbor, and NOAA names striped bass among the species that prey on river herring.

Read the water column as a sketch, not a record: the Boston gauge's temperature series runs from 2015 to 2021 with 2018 missing, and July, August and September rest on three years each. One pattern survives every year it covers: from October through January the harbor sat above the air normal, and from April through August below it. On average the water bottoms out in February, a month after the air.

The longest day of 2026 is June 21, 15h 17m; the shortest, December 21, 9h 05m. The meridian passing drifts about 50 minutes later daily: a dawn window this week is an afternoon window in a fortnight.

Since September 2000, treated effluent from Deer Island has traveled through a rock tunnel under Massachusetts Bay to a point about 9.5 miles east of the island and dispersed into 100-foot-deep water, replacing the old 30-foot-deep outfall inside the harbor. MWRA also tracks the harbor's flounder: in the late 1980s more than 75% of those examined had early liver disease, and its 2023 monitoring found none in flounder caught in Boston Harbor.

Boston is far enough north that daylight swings by about six hours between the solstices, from a little over 15 hours to about 9. Around the June solstice the sun sets after 8:20 p.m.; through December it is down between about 4:10 and 4:20 p.m., which compresses the winter fishing day severely.

The saltwater season here tracks the water. On the Boston gauge's monthly averages the harbor is above fifty degrees from May through October and drops back below it in November, the warm stretch in which migratory striped bass and bluefish move up the coast and back. Winter flounder are the exception, spawning inshore in winter before that window opens. At 42 degrees north the December sun is down before half past four, which removes the option of extending the season by fishing longer.
