Milwaukee's lakefront shore fishing runs through piers and parks rather than one structure. The Wisconsin DNR lists McKinley Marina's pier, the wooden fishing pier at South Shore Park, Cupertino Pier and extensive shore fishing throughout Lakeshore State Park, each with salmon and brown trout among the dominant species.

The Root River Steelhead Facility in Lincoln Park, Racine, south of the city, is Wisconsin's primary source of steelhead eggs and brood stock. The DNR posts updates on the fish it processes every week from September through December and from March through May, so the Racine run is tracked with counts rather than anecdote.

The Wisconsin DNR's fall shore-fishing chart for the Milwaukee area places chinook salmon in September and October with the peak in September, and coho salmon in October and November with the peak in October, which puts the two salmon runs about a month apart.

On average, winter ice on Lake Michigan is partial: NOAA's Great Lakes lab puts the lake's long-term mean peak ice extent at 41.4 percent of its surface. Milwaukee's normal mean temperatures for January and February, 24.0 and 27.1 degrees Fahrenheit, are both below freezing.
